Island Hopping
This is your chance to see whales and dolphins off the west coast of Scotland.
If you think you‘ve seen it all - you haven’t seen nuffin yet!
“If I was to describe the wildlife experience that we had today it would be… mindblowing,,,goosebumps all round I think!
Never in our wildest dreams did we think that we would come face to face with a minke whale determined to play after watching it feed wonderfully from a baitball, but we also saw pods of dolphins and porpoise and caught wonderful fish to release back to the wild.
The most delicious seafood lunch was served to us after a short and enjoyable excursion on the Isle of Eigg and then a voyage back to Mallaig to see the resident harbour seals.
Can I recommend – blinking right I can!!!!”
Eigg and Muck are some of the most beautiful Hebridean Islands. located off the west coast of Scotland, south of the Isle of Skye. The islands have a fascinating history, fantastic wildlife, and a thriving community’s. Exploring the islands is a journey through time when the West Coast of Scotland was situated at the edge of an ancient ocean 1000 million years ago and was then overlaid with lava flows when volcanic complexes erupted as continental drifts split Scotland from North America with the opening of the North Atlantic. Ancient forts, burial mounds, early Christian crosses, Viking occupation, shielings, and clearance ruins have all left their mark on the islands after 8,000 years of human occupation.
There will be opportunities to spot the diverse wildlife on the cruise that will depart from Mallaig, and as we approach the isle of Eigg, Minke whales can be found feeding in the sapphire blue water near the island, thought to be drawn there by a confluence of the tides around Ardnamurchan Point and the abundance of food in the area, close up encounters are not uncommon. This area is frequently visited by harbour porpoises and dolphins. The volcanically formed Maxwell Banks that surround the islands form excellent structures for deep sea fishing for large pollock!
We will have the option to step ashore and visit the family-owned Isle of Muck for lunch and visit one of the best cafes on the west coast! All the produce is locally sourced from the island. There will be opportunities to haul lobster and crab pots during this trip as well as hand-feeding harbour seals!
